‘Salary for life’ for judges should be debated – De Lange

This latest salvo in the conflict between the government and the judiciary follows complaints from judges that the Judicial Services Commission Amendment Bill, now before Parliament’s Justice Committee, removes from them the right to do paid work after they have retired. The Bill is one of a package of Bills aimed at transforming the judiciary. Two of the Bills, the Superior Courts Bill and the Constitutional Amendment Bill, have already been shelved after protests that they affected the independence of the judiciary. De Lange said the matter was before Parliament and should be discussed there, but proceeded to strongly suggest that if post-retirement work was up for debate then the way in which judges were paid should be debated, too.
