Green law proposed for car sales

Publish date: 11 January 2007

Draft legislation to be published this year – and expected to come into effect in January 2008 – will require all car dealers to inform prospective buyers of exactly how fuel efficient their choice of car is and the level of greenhouse gases each car emits.

According to a report in The Witness, under the legislation, each showroom vehicle would have to display a label informing would-be buyers of the car’s fuel economy — litre consumption per 100 km and the amount in grams of carbon dioxide the car would emit for a kilometre travelled. Motoring organisations welcomed the proposed legislation, saying that it would bring SA motorists in line with international labelling requirements. Full report in The Witness
