Zuma parades the Big Guns today

Publish date: 11 October 2005

The most important trial in the short history of democratic SA gets under way today amid extensive security when former Deputy President Jacob Zuma appears at the Durban Magistrates’ Court on charges relating to his ‘generally corrupt’ relationship with businessman Schabir Shaik.

A Business Day report makes the point that in the past, many ANC leaders have been hauled before court, found guilty, and sentenced to long prison terms. Zuma and his supporters invoke this history of judicial persecution. This time, however, Zuma will appear before a magistrate appointed by the dispensation for which he had fought long and hard. According to a report in The Mercury, Zuma has indicated he will not be intimidated by the National Prosecuting Authority, taking his full legal team to the court to fight an intended adjournment of the trial. He will appear with a team which includes not only his attorney, Michael Hulley, but also Kessie Naidu SC and a number of other senior counsel.
