Woman arrested after accusing singer of rape

Publish date: 22 June 2020
Issue Number: 878
Diary: IBA Legalbrief Africa
Category: Nigeria

The woman who accused singer Oladapo Oyebanjo of rape has been arrested. Seyitan Babatayo laid charges against the musician, claiming he raped her in a Lagos hotel two years ago. BBC News reports that Oyebanjo’s lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, said he has warned Babatayo that he would sue her if the charges were not dropped. It is unclear why Babatayo was arrested. Governors from Nigeria’s 36 states last week launched a state of emergency over the rape crisis in the country. Legalbrief reports that Oyebanjo is best known for his 2012 hit Oliver Twist, an uptempo dance fusion of Afrobeats and electronic dance music that topped the African charts in 2011 and was a top 10 hit in the UK singles chart.
