When she heard the news of her abuser's death, Hope said she was 'broken'. She is one of the young women and girls who for the past year have been travelling to Ugandan courts ready to testify against German national Bernhard Glaser, who is alleged to have sexually abused vulnerable girls like her, who were living in his care. Glaser died in early May at a facility treating inmates of Luzira Prison in Kampala. The day before his death, he had been granted bail, including international leave for medical treatment for stage four skin cancer. CNN reports that he had been detained since last February when he was charged with human trafficking, aggravated defilement, indecent assault and operating an unauthorised children's home. Rachel Bikhole, the Assistant Director of Public Prosecution, described the evidence against the accused as 'overwhelming'. She said Glaser's laptop contained explicit videos and photos of the victims, some as young as five-years-old. Investigators also found e-mail and Facebook messages on Glaser's computer from him to a key witness in the 2013 case offering her money not to testify. Lawyers supporting the prosecution and a police source told CNN this year that Glaser's trial was postponed due to delaying tactics by the defence such as applying for a plea bargain deal and requesting a Flemish interpreter despite his demonstrated English proficiency. As a result, he did not make a plea before his death.
