A top US law firm is to give free assistance to New York Citys landmark case against the gun industry.
The city claims the firearms industry is responsible for gun crimes and a civil case is scheduled in Brooklyn federal court in April. The city seeks an injunction reforming the industry\'s sales and marketing practices, which it claims allow guns to pass too easily into the hands of criminals and create a public nuisance, reports The New York Times. Its fight suffered a major setback when another major law firm pulled out of the case after one of its corporate clients complained. But the new law firm, Thelen Reid & Priest, says it decided to help the city because of its support for public interest legal efforts aimed at preventing gun violence. Lawyers for almost every American gun manufacturer and importer are fighting the case forcefully. They say the judge, Jack Weinstein, is biased and has ignored legal precedents that they say should block the city from proceeding. Full report in The New York Times
