US company in Mozambique fined over HIV tests

The Mozambican Labour Ministry has fined the American demining company Ronco for illegally demanding workers take an HIV test.

Agencia de Informacao de Mocambique reports labour inspectors confirmed that in February Ronco demanded that several of its Mozambican employees take an HIV test as a condition for joining a demining mission in Afghanistan. This was in violation of a law passed in 2002 to protect HIV-positive workers, which makes it illegal to demand an HIV test of workers or candidates for employment.
