UK Web sites to gain protection from defamation suits

The UK Government is considering law changes to give protection to any Web site linking to defamatory content.

The law currently protects Internet service providers, hosting firms and other conduits of information from being sued if they are not aware that the content they\'re hosting or carrying is illegal. The Department of Trade and Industry is now considering extending the law to all sites that have links to disputed content, reports New Media Age. However, they would need to remove the links once informed of problems to avoid being sued. The DTI is calling for the views of businesses and consumers before it makes any changes.
