Presidential hopeful Henry Tumukunde, who has been detained for the past two months, has finally been granted bail. He is facing charges of treason and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition. The Daily Monitor reports that Kampala High Court judge Wilson Kwesiga, today rescinded his earlier decision and released the former Security Minister on a US$13 000 bail. The proceedings were held via a video conference linking the court to the Luzira prison. As previously reported in Legalbrief Today, Tumukunde was allegedly in possession of an unlicensed AK-47 rifle when he was detained on 13 March. He was arrested in a joint operation by Uganda police officers and members of the special force command. Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said the arrest was linked to his recent calls for Rwanda to overthrow President Yoweri Museveni. Tumukunde recently announced his intentions to run in the country's 2021 elections.
