Top military prosecutor finally axed

Publish date: 17 July 2008
Issue Number: 122
Diary: Legalbrief Forensic
Category: Corruption

The SANDF has sacked military prosecuting chief and convicted fraudster Ernest Zwane, nearly two years after Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota claimed he had fired him.

The SANDF has, however, denied there was anything untoward about Zwane's 23 months in the job he was supposedly axed from. Zwane has received nearly R1m in salary since being 'fired' by Lekota, notes the Cape Times. Spokesperson Petrus Mothlabane said 'the Department of Defence had to follow its internal processes to conclude the matter'. He did not detail what the 'internal process' involved. Zwane has described his axing as a 'witch hunt', saying that at least seven high-ranking defence force members have retained their positions, despite being convicted of serious criminal offences. Lekota publicly stated that he had fired Zwane in late August 2006. His announcement followed media revelations that the then newly appointed Director of Military Prosecutions had been convicted by the Scorpions for faking his qualifications and the illegal possession of arms and ammunition.
