Suspected SA drug mule detained in the Phillipines

A South African mother whose 35-year-old daughter told her that she was moving to Cape Town because she had landed a job last month has learned that she is being detained in the Phillipines on drug charges. Rosetta Bruintjies (54) promised to take good care of her grandson while Jolene du Plessis settled in Cape Town. However, she learned she was arrested by police at Ninoy Aquino International Airport in the Philippines after allegedly being caught with more than 5kg of methamphetamine. Bruintjies told City Press’ sister publication Rapport that she had no idea her daughter had even left the country. Rosetta had entered the country on an Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi. Du Plessis is being held in Quezon City on charges of violating the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act. If found guilty, she could face life imprisonment. She appeared in court on Thursday, and the case was postponed to 3 October.
