Shabangu fights back over police lease deal

Businessman Roux Shabangu has challenged Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's probe into a lease agreement for police headquarters in Pretoria between his company and the Public Works Department, notes a report on the News24 site.

In a letter sent to Madonsela, Shabangu said Roux Property Fund had come across 194 lease agreements in Pretoria between the department and other companies which were concluded without a tender process. This was the same process - the negotiated bid process - followed with the police headquarters, he said, adding that 73% of all lease agreements concluded by the department in Pretoria followed this method. He has asked the Public Protector to probe the other leases. A report on the IoL site says the Public Protector is investigating the relationship between Shabangu and suspended acting Public Works Director-General Sam Vukela. 'We are investigating your relationship with Mr Vukela,' Thuli Madonsela told Shabangu during a debate on SAfm yesterday. A report on the Mail & Guardian Online site notes that Shabangu has voiced his surprise at the news, saying in a statement: 'I found it interesting and intriguing that she had decided to investigate this ''alleged'' relationship, and ignore my request of a broader investigation into the ... negotiated bid leases.'
