Sentencing today for LeisureNet CEs

Publish date: 12 April 2007
Issue Number: 1803
Diary: Legalbrief Today
Category: Tenders

To allow acting Judge Dirk Uijs time to study documents handed in by the State, the sentencing of two former LeisureNet CEs, Peter Gardener and Rod Mitchell, was postponed until today (Thursday) in the Cape High court.

They were found guilty in February of fraud against the company, involving R12m. Gardener and Mitchell agreed to a forfeiture order on the R6m they each received in an underhand gym deal. The agreement was announced by their advocate, Francois van Zyl, as sentencing procedures got under way. Prosecutor Bruce Morrison handed in a draft forfeiture order under the Prevention of Organised Crime Act, which he said he would ask Uijs to formalise once he had passed sentence, says a report on the FIN24 site. The LeisureNet case is one of many issues featured in the latest issue of Legalbrief Forensic, sister publication of Legalbrief Today. The latest issue also reveals how arrests in connection with corruption allegations have rocked the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Published weekly on Thursdays, Legalbrief Forensic covers issues relating to fraud, corruption, governance, cybercrime, transparency, risk management etc in SA and elsewhere in the same reader-friendly format that has made the other Legalbrief titles such a success.
