Lee Elwood, a 25-year-old Scot, has pleaded guilty to taking part in a multi-million-pound international identity theft scam in which credit card and banking details stolen by Russian crime gangs were used to buy goods and raid accounts in the UK, reports The Scotsman.

Elwood was sentenced to four years in prison for being the accomplice to a scam run by American Douglas Havard, which netted more than £6.5m. Havard has been jailed for six years after pleading guilty to conspiracy to defraud and conspiracy to launder money from the proceeds of phishing – the technique used to gain personal information for identity fraud. The case was part of an investigation by the National Hi-Tech Crime Unit into eastern European syndicates that target UK banks and steal cash from customers\' accounts. Full report in The Scotsman
