When a country’s highest-ranking police officer is found in contempt of court through a judgment that excoriates his behaviour, it’s a serious matter. And, as Carmel Rickard explains in her A Matter of Justice column on the Legalbrief site, the seriousness of the situation was strongly emphasised by the judge presiding in the case, Patricia Nyaundi of the High Court in Nairobi, following an interim order issued in July against the Inspector-General of Police, Douglas Kanja Kirocho. That order was made in response to a petition by the Katiba Institute, an organisation that promotes and defends constitutionalism in Kenya.
