A same-s ex couple has turned to the North Gauteng High Court for relief, claiming a Meyerton Children's Court magistrate refused to make a decision about their application to adopt a young coloured boy because they were white and gay.
The four-year-old boy and his baby sister have been in their care since being removed from their homeless, alcoholic parents, notes a report in The Citizen. The married couple - a Gauteng business manager and his stay-at-home partner - asked the court to review the magistrate's refusal to make a decision and allow them to adopt the boy. They are also in the process of trying to adopt the boy's sister. Judge Cynthia Pretorius postponed their application, but ordered that the magistrate should be approached for a decision in the light of reports by the boy's legal representative and a social worker. Both said the boy's parents could not be traced and showed no interest in their children. Full report in The Citizen
