Sacked ANC Chief Whip takes Parliament to court over pay

Former ANC Chief Whip Mbulelo Goniwe has taken Parliament to court to demand it resumes paying his salary, saying he has had to borrow money to survive and risks losing his house and possessions, according to a report in The Mercury, which notes the application will be heard within the next two weeks.

The ANC’s national disciplinary committee, headed by Kader Asmal, found Goniwe guilty last December of sexual harassment at a birthday party he hosted last year, of abuse of power and bringing the party into disrepute. He was expelled from the ANC for three years and lost his position as Chief Whip and MP. But Goniwe appealed, and last month the ANC overturned the decision to expel him, ruling that there had been procedural flaws in the hearing. A new disciplinary committee is to hear the matter afresh. Full report in The Mercury (subscription needed)
