Russia to draw up tough new anti-terror law

In the aftermath of Beslan, Russian lawmakers are considering sweeping counter-terrorism laws, including proposals that would allow the country to declare itself at war and impose tight restrictions on travel and the media.

The Guardian reports that under the plans, Russian television and radio journalists would not be allowed to report on a siege until the situation had been resolved. But there are concerns the new laws not really related to terrorism, but part of the Kremlin’s effort to exert more central control. Duma, Russia\'s lower house of parliament, has been tasked with drawing up a new anti-terror Bill. Two-thirds of the Duma\'s MPs are members of the United Russia party, which supports the president, Vladimir Putin. Full report in The Guardian
