A prison warder who is accused of assisting two prisoners to escape from the East London Maximum B prison claims he was tortured, starved and denied visitors and phone calls for two days.
The claims by Bantwini Bovu were made during a trial-within-a trial in the East London High Court over the admissibility of a confession that he allegedly made to police, says the Daily Dispatch. Bovu and his colleague, Cyprian Matshaya, are charged with corruption and aiding an escape. Bovus attorney, Nompakamiso Mlonyeni, told the court her client had been stripped naked and tortured by a serious and violent crimes special task team to force him to confess to knowing about guns being smuggled at the prison before awaiting-trial prisoners Daniel Nkwiliso and Desmond Nompumza escaped in August 2004.
