A former police captain who commanded the Maitland detective branch and two former subordinates are to go on trial in November on charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.
Former captain Trevor Chetty (35), and subordinates Ronald Matthews (46) and Jan Stevens (45), appeared on Friday in the Cape Town Regional Court. Bail was extended and a trial date was set for November 5, says a report on The Citizen site. The charge sheet alleges that Chetty corruptly received R5 500 in May last year, to either withdraw a particular criminal case, or to instruct Matthews and Stevens to present false testimony to the Cape Town Magistrates Court, in order to secure the withdrawal of the case.
