New waste disposal site for Atlantis?

Publish date: 05 June 2007
Issue Number: 13
Diary: Legalbrief Environmental
Category: Waste

The City of Cape Town is considering Atlantis as a location for a new waste disposal site as existing landfills are expected to reach their capacity in half the time originally forecast, reports the Cape Argus.

However, it faces an uphill battle to obtain the land, which was recently purchased by a property group. In 2000 the city undertook feasibility studies to identify sites for landfill over the next 30 years. Four sites were identified. In 2002, further evaluations ranked a site Kalbaskraal and that at Atlantis as preferred sites. Both were subjected to full environmental impact assessments. These found that the impact significance of developing the Atlantis site would be lower and cheaper than that for Kalbaskraal. A report, to be discussed by the council\'s portfolio committee on utilities, says that the city will need the Atlantis site by 2013 but that a number of legal processes still needed to be followed.
