New police station opens

Publish date: 25 May 2020

A newly-constructed police station has been handed over by the AU Mission in Somalia. The building, funded by the Danish Government, is situated in the town of Dholby in Jubaland State, a highly diverse autonomously controlled region in southern Somalia. A report on the IoL site notes that the initiative aims to improve security in the region through community policing. The AU Mission in Somalia will train the police and offer mentorship programmes. Mission commander Paul Njema said Dhobley ‘has grown to a very big town and, of course, when towns grow they come with challenges’. He added that there is a need for two more police stations in the area. The region continues to implement the Somalia Transition Plan which was endorsed by the AU Peace and Security Council in April 2018.
