The so-called ‘monster of Mitchell\'s Plain\', Lewis Bowman, has been convicted of murdering a Mitchell\'s Plain family of three and then repeatedly raping and indecently assaulting two former women friends in the family\'s home.

Valerie and Terence Oliver and Ricardo Olifant, Valerie\'s son, were murdered. According to a Weekend Argus report, Judge Willem Louw said in the Cape High Court that it was ‘futile’ for the court to speculate about what had driven Bowman to murder a family that he repeatedly claimed had treated him as ‘one of their own’, but said it had been proved that he had started stealing the family\'s property once they were ‘out of the way’. Addressing Bowman\'s account of his ‘consensual sex’ with the rape victims, the judge said Bowman was a ‘consummate liar’ whose dishonesty had been conclusively demonstrated by medical and eyewitness evidence. Bowman will be sentenced on June 22. Full Weekend Argus report
