Minister warns about public service action

Public Service and Administration Minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi yesterday warned that action would be taken against any public service employee taking part in a go-slow or work-to-rule action.
An SABC News report quotes the Minister as saying the government had not received any official notification of industrial action from any union, and any action, including go-slows and work-to-rule, would be considered an unprotected strike. The Minister\'s remarks coincided with public sector labour unions saying they would start with industrial action leading up to a nation-wide strike by public service employees at the end of the month. At the heart of the threats is the unions\' rejection of a 6% wage increase offer by government. Unions are demanding 12%.

The SA Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) says 90% of its 230 000 members have voted in favour of a strike. Our members are not happy with the 6% that\'s on offer by government and they are saying that they are willing to embark on industrial action in support of their demands. More than 90% of the Sadtu membership has voted in favour (of the strike) and that will also assist us in giving notice to our employer on the intended industrial action, Don Pasquallie, a SADTU representative, is quoted as saying in a report on the SABC News site.
