McBride in court today

Robert McBride, the Ekurhuleni metro police chief, has been served with summons to appear before the Pretoria Magistrates’ Court today, according to SABC News, which says it has learnt that charges of reckless driving and defeating the ends of justice will be brought against McBride by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

McBride was driving near Centurion in an official car on the night of the accident. The NPA earlier said it would only take the matter to court if it has the relevant information. According to a report in The Mercury, it is believed that the NPA has taken a decision not to prosecute McBride on allegations of drunken driving because of a lack of blood analysis evidence. Three officers who were on the scene of the accident have made statements to the NPA. It is alleged, among other things, that McBride was driven from the scene by one of his officers on his instruction. Earlier, McBride said he had been rushed to hospital after suffering head injuries. He said he could remember nothing of the incident.
