Mbeki urged to set up tribunal to probe Selebi

According to a report on the Mail & Guardian Online site, Leon said in a letter to Mbeki: ‘I write in respect of the growing disquiet expressed across the length and breadth of SA with regard to the conduct of National Police Commissioner Mr Jackie Selebi, and to respectfully request that you establish a board of inquiry to investigate the serious allegations made against him.’ Over the past month, a series of very disturbing allegations had surfaced, which pointed to Selebi being guilty, at best, of inappropriate conduct, or of having inappropriate relationships with known criminals. ‘At worst, the commissioner is possibly guilty of wrongdoing,’ Leon said. More breakthroughs in the Brett Kebble murder case can be expected soon. According to an SABC News report, Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula has told Parliament that the ongoing probe into the execution-style murder of the former mining magnate is at an advanced stage. Glenn Agliotti, a friend of Selebi, is the chief suspect in the murder. Nqakula says he cannot release more information at this stage, as the case is too sensitive.
