Marriage dowry system under court scrutiny

A Supreme Court appeal challenging the payment of a dowry as a condition for marriage in Uganda has been postponed.
New Vision reports that a panel of seven justices deferred the matter to its 'next convenient session'. The report notes this follows a 2010 Constitutional Court decision that upheld the payment of a dowry. According to the report, activists under lobby group Mifumi had argued that the practice was connected to domestic violence and its abolition would protect women 'from being turned into property'.
