Life for man who raped his little sister

The Pretoria High Court has sentenced a 27-year-old man to life imprisonment for repeatedly raping and sodomising his little sister over a period of five years.

Handing down sentence, Judge Ronnie Bosielo said the courts had a duty to ensure that the constitutionally protected rights of women and children were given full effect. ‘Where a crime is so serious that it threatens the moral and social fabric and wellbeing of society, society expects our courts not to shirk their responsibilities, but to rise to the challenge to impose appropriate sentences,’ he said. Bosielo, who quoted at length from medical evidence presented during the man\'s Regional Court trial, described the frail young victim\'s physical injuries as ‘horrendous, grotesque and horrifying’, according to a report on the IoL site. The girl was in such pain and her injuries so severe that she had to be examined under anaesthesia and needed corrective surgery if she ever hoped to live a normal life. ‘The damage I saw to the complainant\'s genitalia and anus is something I never imagined could happen to an eight-year-old, let alone an adult.’ Full report on IoL site
