A legal bid is to be made to stop the Al Grand Prix, scheduled to take place through the streets of Durban on Sunday, over concerns of safety, noise levels, and the well being of residents living in the vicinity of the race track.
The bid is being spearheaded by Ecopeace, which aims to get 100 signatures on a petition to strengthen its case, says a report in The Mercury. The partys attorney, John Govender, said the eThekwini Municipalitys response to Ecopeaces proposed court papers was insufficient because City Manager Michael Sutcliffe had simply denied Ecopeaces concerns and had reserved the right to respond. While the teams prepare to begin testing tomorrow, Ecopeace will attempt to get signatures from people who have been affected by the race to launch an urgent interdict to prevent the event from getting under way.
