Lawyers enlisted to probe SA football boss

Publish date: 01 July 2024

African football’s governing body CAF has enlisted the services of leading lawyer Tembeka Ngcukaitobi SC to get to the bottom of issues surrounding the SA Football Association (Safa) and its president Danny Jordaan. CAF has instituted its own investigations to see whether there are grounds to charge Jordaan for wrongdoing, following the police raid on Safa’s headquarters on 8 March. During the search-and-seizure operation at the offices in Nasrec, the Commercial Crime Unit said it was executing warrants related to allegations of ‘fraud and theft amounting to R1.3m’ against Jordaan. This led CAF to enter the fray and the continental body has now tasked Ngcukaitobi with probing the matter. City Press has established that he will be supported by a Swiss lawyer and another legal expert from Cameroon with his duties. Several witnesses have also been lined up. Among those set for a series of interviews are former CEO Dennis Mumble and several former and current Safa NEC members, as well as staff members. Ex-NEC member Willy Mookao laid charges against Jordaan for unauthorised payments two years ago. At the time of the raid in March, the Hawks said the action was the culmination of an extensive probe into Jordaan’s alleged widespread maladministration and abuse of office.
