The Johannesburg High Court has sentenced Mongameli Ndebele to life imprisonment for the murder of restaurateur Ian Gillies (50) in December 2005.
He was stabbed to death while locking up his popular restaurant, notes The Star. Passing sentence, Judge Francois Malan said he could find no compelling or substantial reason why Ndebele, a waiter at the restaurant, should not receive the mandatory life sentence for the murder and 20 years for aggravated robbery. He found that Gillies had been a kind-hearted person who had cared for Ndebele\'s father when he was ill and had re-employed Ndebele after firing him for stealing a colleague\'s cellphone. The judge noted that Ndebele had not shown any remorse or bothered to apologise to the deceased\'s family. Ndebele, the judge found, was a cold-blooded killer who had carefully planned his heinous crime. Full report in The Star
