Court explains delay in elections ruling

Kenya’s Supreme Court has denied orchestrating a delay in the determination of a petition over a disputed election, promising to issue its ruling by 21 February. Governor Mohamed Mahamud launched the petition against Ahmed Mohamad who successfully approached the High Court and the Court of Appeal to overturn the 8 August 2017 election on the grounds that the governor lacked valid academic credentials. CapitalFM reports that the Supreme Court notes that it is within the 90-day timeline within which a ruling must be rendered. It also outlined a number of applications that delayed the conclusion of the appeal which was initially filed in May last year.
