Judge claims he was 'falsely accused' by JSC

Acting Judge Chris Greenland (66) has criticised the JSC while delivering his final judgment in the Eastern Cape High Court (East London) before retiring from the law profession after 36 years.

According to a Daily Dispatch report, Greenland said that during his interview for an appointment as a permanent judge last year, he was faced with opposition by members of the JSC. 'It was openly stated by a commissioner that he was ambushing me and that he and others on the commission were committed to opposing my appointment even before the interview had progressed,' he said, adding that he was falsely accused of being unfamiliar with basic court procedures by then-commissioner Julian von Klemperer. The report says Von Klemperer apparently read out extracts of a court transcript in which Grahamstown attorney Mark Nettleton presented Neliswa Dinge for admission as an advocate. According to the transcript, Greenland had argued that advocates should be sworn in chambers, not in court. Greenland said the transcript read out at the hearing was false, and he accused former Chief Justice Pius Langa of 'fobbing' him off when the matter was subsequently brought to his attention in writing.
