Hlophe race row to be discussed by judges

Allegations that Cape Judge President John Hlophe recently racially abused a white lawyers would top the agenda at the heads of court meeting next week, according to Chief Judge Pius Langa.

Business Day says says the allegation came as the judiciary seeks to address allegations of racism in the legal fraternity. Langa said racism was a problem facing the entire country, and he was not aware that it was particularly acute within the judiciary. He said all heads of court were asked to raise the issue of racism in their jurisdictions and invite comment. Investigative magazine Noseweek reported that Hlophe allegedly called attorney Joshua Greef ‘a piece of white shit’ after the attorney commented on a judgment made by a black acting judge.
