Hlophe denies racism allegations

Startling claims of racism against Cape High Court Judge President John Hlophe have been dismissed by the judge as ‘utter rubbish’.

According to a report on the News24 site, Hlophe said he had no idea where allegations that he racially abused a white lawyer and told him to go back to the Netherlands came from. ‘I reserve my rights,’ he said in response to the allegation, made in Noseweek magazine, that he racially abused attorney Joshua Greef in his chambers, three weeks ago. The article alleges Hlophe summoned Greef to his chambers and called him ‘a piece of white s..t’. The article claims the incident was witnessed by Advocate Dirk Uijs, SC and prosecutor Christens van der Vijver. It claimed that the incident occurred after Acting Judge Tandaswa Ndita found Moegmaat Isaacs guilty of murdering his neighbour\'s child, Sasha-Leigh Crook. Greef was Isaac\'s attorney and Uijs was his defence council. Norman Arendse, chair of the General Council of the Bar, says no complaints about the issue have been received. Lawyers were quoted as saying the accusations were a form of retaliation as Hlophe had been instrumental in setting up an investigation (still under way) into racism on the Bench.
