Government states position on free speech

The government has made a strong stand on freedom of speech, while acknowledging the hurt caused to Muslims by the cartoons published in newspapers.

It has also warned against hate speech, according to a Business Day report. The Cabinet said in a statement that \'SA upholds the principle of freedom of speech\'. It added: \'However, we do appreciate that our Constitution enjoins us, in exercising this right, to respect the sensitivities of individuals and communities, and to eschew actions that may be interpreted as hate speech.\' Full Business Day report
