Government may target petrol-guzzlers

A government department has raised the possibility of a green tax to mitigate environmental impacts by suggesting the introduction of sweeping measures to discourage the purchase of petrol-guzzling vehicles.

The Minerals and Energy Department has mooted a tax of up to 33% on the selling price of large vehicles, and doubling their annual licensing fees, says a report in Business Day. Director of Energy Efficiency, Elsa du Toit, told a briefing yesterday that the department would ask Finance Minister Trevor Manuel to consider introducing the levies in a bid to promote greater energy efficiency.
