Google to appeal against news linking decision

A Brussels court has ruled in favour of Copiepresse, a Belgian copyright protection group representing 18 mostly French-language newspapers, that sued Google, claiming the Web search leader infringed copyright laws and demanded it remove their reports.

Copiepresse had complained that Google\'s search engine\'s \'cache\' links offering free access to archived material that the papers usually sell on a subscription basis. The court ordered Google to remove any articles, photos or links from its sites – including Google News – that it displays without the newspapers\' permission, The Globe and Mail reports. The court cut a retroactive daily fine of €25 000 for each day Google did not comply – far lower than the September judgment that threatened €1m a day. Google would not comment on the fine, saying its lawyers were still examining the judgment, but did say it was disappointed with the ruling and would appeal. Full report in The Globe and Mail
