Post-election stand-off

Ghana is heading for a post-election stand-off with opposition supporters claiming victory in a contest the governing party also said it had won. Jubilant supporters of the opposition New Patriotic party last week celebrated outside the house of Nana Akufo-Addo, who at 72 is making his third, and probably final, run at the presidency. The Financial Times reports that the opposition earlier released an internal tally, based on what it said was the collation of official polling data, showing a victory for Akufo-Addo with 53% of the vote against 44% for John Mahama, the incumbent President. Mahama’s governing National Democratic Congress said the opposition figures were 'propaganda' designed to hoodwink the international media. Legalbrief reports that hackers targeted the website of Ghana's electoral commission ahead of the release of results. The commission said it 'deplored' the incident which left the site offline for a few hours early on Thursday.
