The Pretoria High Court granted its first gay divorce when it on Friday dissolved the marriage of a Pretoria couple less than three months after their wedding, a report in The Citizen says.
Judge Chris Botha granted a final divorce decree to 28-year-old Wonderboom South social worker Kenneth Henning-Hattingh following a settlement with his partner Jaco Henning-Hattingh (29). The couple was married in community of property in terms of the new Civil Union Act on January 2, but Kenneth said in court papers their relationship had broken down to such an extent that there was no hope left for a normal marriage. He said they had such different interests and views of life that they were not compatible as life partners. The couple reached a settlement in terms of which each of them were entitled to retain such moveable assets as they had brought into the marriage and they both waived the right to maintenance.
