First female station launched

Publish date: 18 April 2022
Issue Number: 970
Diary: IBA Legalbrief Africa
Category: Somalia

Somalia's first women-run radio and television outlet has opened in Mogadishu. UN-backed Bilan Media will produce content aimed at addressing issues affecting females and champion their rights in the conservative country. Voice of America reports that Bilan translates as bright and clear and the founders say they will stay true to its meaning by shedding light on some of the most consequential issues relating to and affecting women. It hopes to break the barriers in Somalia's conservative society where issues such as rape, sexual assault and women's medical issues are often ignored. ‘This project is designed to overcome many of the challenges facing the community. It will focus on the challenges facing women,’ said editor Nasrin Mohamed. Bilan Media is scheduled to go live on 25 April.
