\'Well-positioned\' individuals in business and politics could face criminal prosecution if it is found they were involved in the damaging \'hoax\' e-mails which did the rounds in the ANC and the intelligence community last year, according to a Cape Argus report.
The e-mails purport to have been sent between senior state and ANC officials, allegedly hatching plans to get rid of \'stumbling blocks\' such as ANC Secretary-General Kgalema Motlanthe and businessman Saki Macozoma. A large number of organisations, including the police, the office of the Inspector-General, the Presidency and the Intelligence Ministry are involved in the probe. The report says the probe is in its final phase. The sources of the e-mails have been determined and some are said to be well known in business and politics. It was found that the reasons given for the surveillance of Macozoma - that he had links with a foreign intelligence agent - were false. Full Cape Argus report
