The DRC’s military is receiving weapons and training from multiple countries without notifying the UN as required by a 2004 resolution, according to a recent report to the Security Council. UN experts are warning that some of the weapons have fallen into the hands of armed groups operating in the east of the country. A report on the News24 site notes that the region is one of Africa's flashpoints, gripped by militia violence that has claimed more than 1 000 lives over the past few months. Kinshasa is accusing neighbouring countries of seeking to destabilise it. The UN, which is monitoring sanctions against the country that expire at the end of the month, says arms are being imported from Albania, Romania, Turkey, SA, Israel, China, Iran, the UK, North Korea, Sudan and the US.
