[*] Sadhasiven Chetty was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment after pleading guilty in the Durban High Court to murdering his mother-in-law.

Jenette Salome Naicker (52), a Chatsworth mother of four was strangled at her home last week. In a statement before the court, Chetty claimed that her constant ‘verbal abuse’ made him snap. Chetty said he lived with his in-laws and at the time of the murder he was unemployed, says the Daily News. In mitigation of sentence, Chetty\'s advocate Vijay Sivakoomar said his client had assisted police in their investigations. He said Chetty had shown remorse by pleading guilty. Judge Sharmaine Balton said it was a ‘brutal and callous’ murder during sentencing of Chetty. She said Chetty\'s actions where ‘horrific and inhumane’.
