Detective’s bail refusal overturned

Serious and Violent Crimes Unit detective Sagie Govender – who is facing charges of corruption – was freed from custody on Friday after a Durban High Court judge overturned a magistrate’s decision not to grant him bail.

According to a report in The Mercury, Judge Sharmaine Balton found that Magistrate Melanie de Jager had erred in refusing him bail. She set bail at R20 000, ordering that he not communicate with state witnesses, not interfere with the investigation and not travel outside of the greater Durban area without the permission of the investigating officer. Govender was arrested on May 18 this year on allegations that he had taken R300 000 in bribes for bail to be arranged for accused people or to have charges withdrawn.
