MPLA veteran Ambrósio Lukoki is calling for the prosecution of former President Eduardo dos Santos. The East African reports that Lukoki, who currently serves as the Angolan ambassador to Tanzania, also wants the former ruler to resign from the ruling party's leadership immediately. He claimed Dos Santos was hiding behind the MPLA leadership to avoid prosecution for the numerous crimes associated with his 38-year rule. The report notes that Lukoki was a close ally of MPLA founder Agostinho Neto. As previously reported in Legalbrief Today, a purge of high-level officials in Angola by new President Joao Lourenco has been hailed as a victory by those campaigning for change in the country. Lourenco was hand-picked by Dos Santos to stand in elections in August and analysts expected him to maintain the status quo.
