The Enlightened Christian Gathering Church (ECG), led by self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri, has been dealt a blow by the Gauteng High Court (Johannesburg) which dismissed its urgent application to restore electricity and nullify certain invoices issued by its landlords for its branch at the Southdale shopping centre. The ECG had approached the court citing in its affidavit deposed by senior pastor Samuel Dulungana that Johannesburg-based property company Periscopic had dubiously invoiced it R148 986 for utilities and allocated the church a different hall from the one on the lease agreement. City Press previously reported that woes were piling up for the fugitive after a Pretoria-based property company demanded more than R1.9m for a broken lease agreement of the premises of the church’s headquarters. Legalbrief reports that the Bushiris fled SA in November last year, just days after being granted bail in relation to another criminal case against them. In this matter, Bushiri, his wife and three other co-accused face multiple charges of fraud, theft, and money laundering in relation to an investment scam that allegedly defrauded investors of R102m. The couple was released on bail of R200 000 each with strict conditions attached, but they fled to Malawi with Bushiri claiming he left because of safety and security issues.
