In a development that may support claims that SA was party to the ‘rendition’ of a foreign national suspected of terrorism, Amnesty International reports that Khalid Mahmood Rashid, allegedly deported legally from SA to Pakistan in 2005, may have appeared in court in Pakistan, writes E-Brief News.

According to a report on the IoL site, Amnesty International said it had received information from Pakistan sources that ‘Khalid Mahmood Rashid appeared before the federal review board in the Supreme Court building in Islamabad on 12 April 2007’. Erwin Van Der Borght, acting director of the Africa Programme at Amnesty International, said Rashid was in the custody of Inter-Services Intelligence on Monday, despite authorities being ordered to transfer him to a prison in Rawalpindi and allow him access to his family and medical care. He said Rashid had already suffered 18 months of secret detention and it was totally unacceptable for the Pakistan authorities to continue to deny him access to his lawyer, family and medical care.
