Abalone has become intensively poached in SA over the past decade, resulting in resources being largely devastated raising concern of possible extinction, writes Enact-International.
In an attempt to stop poaching and the illegal trading of abalone, SA has listed it on Appendix III of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). The listing, which came into effect on May 3, makes SA the first nation to list abalone on Appendix III of CITES. (Appendix III includes species which a party identifies as being subject to regulation within its jurisdiction for the purpose of preventing or restricting exploitation and needs the co-operation of other parties in the control of trade.) Imported SA abalone will now need to be accompanied by a CITES export permit from SA or a certificate of origin if imported from a country other than SA. Customs officials in importing countries will have to ensure that consignments of abalone may only enter that country if accompanied by the necessary documentation.
