* Fifty of the 56 336 prisoners freed in terms of a special remission of sentences since June 1 have been rearrested, the Department of Correctional Services said yesterday. They have been ‘identified and re-admitted to correctional services centres for allegedly committing mostly economic crimes such as theft and housebreaking,’ said spokesman Manelisi Wolela. – The Witness

*Three City of Cape Town health department officials were found guilty yesterday at a disciplinary hearing of stealing baby milk earmarked for HIV-positive infants. A formal judgment will be written, which will indicate whether criminal charges will be brought against them. The officials stole 2 000 tins of baby milk formula destined for newborn babies of HIV-positive mothers at a Gugulethu clinic. – Cape Argus * Solidarity yesterday announced that its 24 000 members in the metal and engineering industry were to immediately embark on protest action, culminating in a march and strike on Thursday next week. This comes after Solidarity\'s Metal and Engineering Industry Council rejected an offer of a 5.2% wage increase for artisans, even though the offer had been accepted by other trade unions in the industry. – Business Report
